Fundamentals of a Look Dev Template
In this course, Sophie DesAulniers introduces you to an instrumental part of the Katana workflow - production templates. Templates are a key part of working in Katana as they provide a starting point for artists so they can begin working on any asset or project straight away, with minimal time spent on scene setup.
For Look Development, templates will usually contain the majority of nodes required to load in an asset, build and assign materials, and bake them out, as well as containing other key components such as the setup for the Look Dev scene, turntable, HDRI lighting variations, and AOVs.
This course will guide you through the setup of all these main components, and show you how you can build your own template that any asset can be loaded into.
Sophie is a Lighting and Compositing Artist and has worked with Katana at a range of studios including WildBrain and Atomic Cartoons. Throughout the course, Sophie draws on her experience as an artist to demonstrate techniques and tools that can be implemented to help streamline your own workflows and help you get the most out of your template setups.
This course uses Arnold but the same principles and workflows can be applied no matter which renderer you’re using.
