Smooth Step node

Access: Nodes > Math > Smooth Step

Cubic S-curve ramp from 0 to 1 between Edge0 and Edge1, with zero slope at both edges. Useful for effects such as chipped paint thresholds and decal fading.

The below examples assume that Edge0 = 0.0 and Edge1 = 1.0

Input (RGB) Output (RGB)
-0.2, -0.2, -0.2 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 (clamped below Edge0)
0.5, 0.5, 0.5 0.5, 0.5, 0.5
1.2, 1.2, 1.2 1.0, 1.0, 1.0 (clamped above Edge1)

Smooth Step node inputs

Edge0

The lower bound threshold where the transition begins.

Edge1

The upper bound threshold where the transition completes.

Input

The input value to be interpolated.

Smooth Step node outputs

Output

The cubic Hermite S-curve interpolation from 0 to 1 across the range Edge0 … Edge1. The curve has zero slope at both edges.

Values below Edge0 output 0; values above Edge1 output 1.
