Using Clips
Clips enable you to edit and structure the content in a Read node.
Creating a Clip
| 1. | Create a Read node in the Node Graph and connect it to an Output node. Input your desired sequence in the Pattern parameter of the Read node. |
| 2. | There are two ways to add clips: |
- In the Sequencer timeline, right-click on thr Read track and select Add Clip, or press K. This will overwrite whatever you had set on the node. This method doesn’t require you to set the pattern (or other parameters) on the Read node.
- Click Add clip from parameters to create a clip from the current pattern path of the Read node. A pattern will need to have been set for this to be possible.
| 3. | A clip will be created based on the number of frames of the Read node's sequence. |
Editing Clips
There are different tools to use to edit the clip and customize your sequence.
• Use the Select tool (
) to get properties of the clip and popover.
• The Move tool (
) enables you to slide the clip across the sequencer timeline, allowing you to define the start frametime of the clip.
• The Trim tool (
) modifies the number of frames within the clip.
Note: You will only be able to add frames to a clip using the Trim tool if you have extra frames in the sequence to fill the new clip length.
• Use the Razor(
) tool to split a clip.
• Use the Razor all tool (
) to razor all clips at the frametime.
• To put clips back together, use Razor Join (
). The clips must have the same pattern, and they can’t have any gaps in between them in the timeline.
• Use the Slip tool (
) to modify the starting frame of a sequence.
Click and drag on a clip to shift the contents of a clip forwards or backwards, while keeping the clip at the same position in the sequence. A clip can only be slipped if it has been trimmed to less than its maximum frame count.
• Use Repeat mode in the Properties panel to loop the clip between the start frame and the end frame. By default, the Repeat count is set to 0 (unlimited looping), but this can be edited e.g. altering the value to 1 will mean the clip only repeats once.
• The Retime tool (
) enables you to adjust the length of a clip. When the frametime is adjusted, the speed of the clip's playback will change to fit the new duration. The clip cannot overlap adjacent clips. For example, this clip is currently at 1x speed as the clip is the full length of the frames:
Once the Retime tool has been used on this clip, the playback condenses to 2x speed to fit all the frames in the reduced duration:
• You can Retarget clip (
), which allows you to retain the parameters and duration of the clip with a different sequence. If the retargeted clip has fewer frames than the current duration, the clip will be truncated. This option is available from the right-click context menu.
It is also possible to add new clips within a Read node in the sequencer. Right-click on the Read track to add another clip to the sequence, and choose the desired file path from the file explorer. The clip will have the length of the new sequence, and will be clamped to the start of the following clip. You can then make any edits within the sequencer to your clips in order to fully customize the playback of your sequence.
Any edits you make in the sequencer will be reflected in the Read node's properties.
Note: Clips override general repeats. For example, the repeat will start from the clip rather than the start frame.
