7. Applying Look Files, Lighting, & AOVs

Matt Barker of Intraware concludes the series by applying look files and setting up lighting in Katana.

You can use a LookFileAssign node to select the look file.

Add a LookFileResolve node to tell Katana that it should unpack and apply the look file operations.

Matt uses Show Incoming Scene on a GafferThree node to show every light that is upstream in the node graph.

In the GafferThree node parameters, right-click on a light and select Adopt for Editing to reveal editable parameters for the light.

Matt adds a .tdl image to a 3Delight environment light.

Use Pin Visible Leaves in the scene graph to maintain item visibility in the viewer.

Instead of clicking around the scene graph to select a light, you can set sync selection to in/out to highlight the light in the scene graph when it is selected in the GafferThree parameters tab.

Edit the 3Delight settings using the DlSettings node.

To speed up the viewer, turn on speed boost in the DlSettings parameters to halve the resolution and reduce sampling.

3Delight offers a simplified approach to AOVs in Katana.

Click the Add button in the Image Layers section of the DlSettings node to add AOVs.

Turn on Save IDs as Cryptomatte to convert ID passes to Cryptomatte versions.

Set ImageFilename and Image Format in the DLSettings parameters (so no need for a RenderOutputDefine node).

The Render node lists the output paths.

To use both the 3Delight and the Katana monitor renderer, open Preferences, select 3Delight and set renderView to both.

You can use the 3Delight renderer to view all the selected AOVs. You can also open the mixer using Ctrl+X, which gives you control over some useful render settings.

By default, the Render node allows you to do preview, live, or disk rendering.

You can render out, or bake out, different look files.
