How to Get Photorealistic Depth of Field with Nuke's Bokeh Node
In this course, VFX Artist Alfie Vaughan guides you on adding photorealism to your shots with Nuke's defocus tools.
• In part one, Alfie demonstrates different methods for adding depth of field by defocusing the background, midground and foreground at various degrees with several of Nuke's defocus nodes.
Note Alfie uses a plug-in called Channel Hotbox to switch channels but you can easily do that using the dropdown at the top of the Viewer.
• In part two, Alfie demonstrates how to achieve the next level of beauty and realism in virtual cinematography with an in-depth guide on Nuke's bokeh node. Some VFX shots demand a higher level of focal finesse than what’s achievable with the 2D data from a depth pass. For these shots, industry VFX artists use 3D depth data, or “deep”, where every pixel in the image has its own individual 3D depth data. This allows you to achieve ultra-realistic focal depths.
Although deep data gives you perfect defocus, it is costly in terms of time and hard drive space, so it may not always be the first solution. But if you’re working on a shot that really needs precise focal depths, and the standard defocus toolset is not giving you the accuracy required, using deep data with Nuke’s bokeh node is the way to go.
